PARKES HERITAGE SPOTLIGHT
Rising above the rural landscape north of Parkes, the Parkes Radio Telescope — affectionately known as “The Dish” — is one of Australia’s most recognisable scientific landmarks. Commissioned in 1961, the 64-metre radio telescope placed Parkes at the forefront of international radio astronomy and has contributed to major scientific discoveries for more than six decades. Its most famous moment came in 1969, when the telescope helped receive and relay television signals from the Apollo 11 Moon landing, allowing millions of people around the world to watch humanity take its first steps on the lunar surface.
The Dish is significant for its scientific, technological and cultural importance. At the time of its construction, it was one of the world’s most advanced radio telescopes and has since contributed to research into pulsars, galaxies, magnetic fields and the structure of the universe.
