HERITAGE SPOTLIGHT
Set within the leafy surrounds of Eastwood, Brush Farm House is one of the City of Ryde’s most significant heritage places. Built around 1820 by explorer Gregory Blaxland, the house dates from a period when Ryde was still emerging as one of the colony’s earliest areas of European settlement. Its surviving architecture, landscape setting and long history provide a rare connection to the agricultural and social development of early Sydney.
Brush Farm House is significant for its age, architecture and strong associations with some of Australia’s early colonial figures. Its Palladian-influenced design, surviving Georgian fabric and later Victorian additions demonstrate how the property evolved through generations of occupation, while the broader Brush Farm Estate played an important role in early agriculture and experimentation, including Gregory Blaxland’s pioneering wine production.
Over more than two centuries, Brush Farm House has experienced a remarkable range of uses. From a grand colonial residence and working estate to a reformatory and later educational and administrative uses, the building reflects changing attitudes, institutions and community needs across different periods of Ryde’s history. These layers make Brush Farm House much more than a preserved residence — they provide an unusually rich record of how the district itself evolved.
Brush Farm House is a particularly strong example of heritage conservation in practice. Following an extensive restoration, the property reopened in 2007 after significant original and later fabric — including stonework, brickwork, cedar joinery, timber floors and Victorian features — was carefully conserved. New elements were introduced sensitively to allow the building to continue serving a public role while protecting the qualities that make it significant.
