TWEED HERITAGE SPOTLIGHT
Perched on the dramatic headland at Fingal Head, Fingal Head Lighthouse is one of the Tweed Shire’s most recognisable heritage landmarks and an enduring symbol of the region’s rich maritime history. First illuminated in 1872, the lighthouse was constructed to improve navigation along the northern New South Wales coastline and safely guide vessels past the entrance to the Tweed River. Today, it remains one of Australia’s oldest operating lighthouses, standing proudly above the Pacific Ocean while continuing to welcome visitors to one of the Shire’s most spectacular coastal landscapes.
Fingal Head Lighthouse is significant for its historical, architectural and maritime heritage. Designed under the direction of Colonial Architect James Barnet, the lighthouse reflects the expansion of New South Wales’ coastal navigation network during the nineteenth century and the growing importance of the Tweed River as a shipping destination. Its elevated position overlooking the ocean, together with the surrounding volcanic basalt columns and coastal reserve, creates one of the most distinctive heritage landscapes on the New South Wales coast.
For generations of locals and visitors, Fingal Head Lighthouse has been much more than a navigational beacon. It has become one of the Tweed’s favourite destinations for whale watching, coastal walks, photography and exploring the unique basalt rock formations created by the ancient Tweed Volcano. The lighthouse continues to connect visitors with both the region’s maritime history and the extraordinary natural environment that surrounds it.
