Located in the heart of Wagga Wagga, the Historic Council Chambers is an important civic landmark that reflects the city’s growth and development as one of regional New South Wales’ major centres. Originally constructed to accommodate the administration of local government, the building played an important role in Wagga Wagga’s civic life and today continues that community connection as part of the Museum of the Riverina.
The Historic Council Chambers is significant for its historical, architectural and social values and its longstanding association with local government in Wagga Wagga. The building reflects an important period in the development of the city, when expanding population, commerce and regional services created the need for increasingly established civic institutions. Its prominent position and distinctive architecture continue to contribute to the character of central Wagga Wagga.
While the building once served the practical needs of local government, today it provides a home for exhibitions and collections associated with the Museum of the Riverina.
