HERITAGE SPOTLIGHT

Collaroy Cinema
One of Sydney's finest surviving Art Deco cinemas

Standing on Pittwater Road, the Collaroy Cinema is one of the Northern Beaches’ most recognisable heritage landmarks. Built in 1938, it was originally known as the De Luxe Theatre and remains a defining feature of Collaroy’s town centre.

Why Is It Significant?

The cinema is one of Sydney’s few operating Art Deco cinemas, recognised for its distinctive curved façade, streamlined detailing and iconic vertical sign. It demonstrates how heritage buildings can continue serving modern communities while preserving their historic character.

More Than Just a Beautiful Building

For generations, the Collaroy Cinema has been a place where locals have gathered for entertainment. Its continued use has helped preserve not only the building itself but also an important part of the Northern Beaches’ history and identity.

Heritage In Action

The Collaroy Cinema is a great example of successful heritage conservation. It shows that heritage protection isn’t about stopping change—it’s about ensuring places evolve in a way that respects the character and history that make them special.
